Decent Parisa - Great In Town Meat Market

I found out about this place while looking for Parisa. I was unaware of the San Antonio location until just recently, but was told its been there 6 years. The other location is in Fair Oaks Ranch.

First off, when you walk into this store, the smell of smoked meats, wood and garlic are going to immediately hit you. If there was a product that tasted the way this store smelled, I would have bought that.

    Items Purchased On This Visit

    Parisa
    Habanero Chunk Pickles
Dried Beef & Jalapeno Sausage Horseshoe Link
    Dog Bones & Pigs Ears

What else did I see while I was in the store? Alligator, crawfish, frozen boudain balls, andouille sausage, huge avocado bombs, fresh made pimento cheese, bacon wrapped steak bombers, key lime cheesecake, jars of pickled garlic, a huge assortment of Texas brand seasoning, beef, beef & jalapeno, and beef jalapeno & cheese dried sausage links, jerky slices, bones and pig ears for dogs, and a whole lot of other items. The selection here was really good, and prices were pretty decent.

Lets start with the Parisa, priced at about $8 lb. The package I got was $6.xx and nearly filled a pint container. Now right off the bat I noticed the parisa here had large chunks of green pepper and onion, something none of the others I've tried had. Wasnt sure how this was going to taste, plus the amount of cheese seemed to be on the extreme side compared to other places. Surprisingly I liked it, and a day later the 2nd time I ate it, I liked it more, the cheese started to melt on its own despite being in the refrigerator. The cheese is kind of odd, I almost suspect its a Velveta style cheese, since it started to melt the way it did. I usually dont like that type of cheese but in this case it actually made a pretty good parisa. However an odd impression I got was that it kinda tasted like a supreme pizza, because of the chunky vegetable ingredients.

Next up, the dried sausage. I used to get dry links from a gas station in Boerne, back in the 80s which I believe came from the Comfort meat market, which is still in operation. Those have been my long time favorite. They offered the 3 types mentioned above, and I went with the beef and jalapeno. It packs a little heat, but its not super spicy, the flavor was good, but I think I might go with plain beef next time. The sausage wasnt super dry, I wanted it still a bit moist, and was easy to chew if you sliced it semi thin. I think it could have used a little more garlic, but that's just my taste.

I did buy a few bones and pigs ears for the dogs, funny enough they cost as much as the people food. Pigs ears were $2.99 each, bones were $7 a lb.

The other thing I can say about this store besides the great selection of items, was that the staff was super friendly. I asked about the parisa, the dog bones, the other location, how long they had been at this location, about the spiciness of items, about the pickles, what their top selling items were, ect.. they answered my endless questions, talked to me about random stuff, and this wasn't just 1 person, it was at least 4 different people. Great customer service.

I'll be back, its the best Parisa I've tried in San Antonio so far, and with the endless products theres plenty items for me to try out. I'd recommend making a trip over and checking this place out for your next BBQ.
