Old Fashioned Diner Food - Large Portions & Great Flavor

I finally made it to Bobbies, the fact they close at 3pm was probably the main reason It took me a while to try it.

The featured item on the menu, a giant chicken fried steak, served with 2 sides. While I was there I saw other people order different items, and the majority of stuff that came out, including a sandwich with something that looked like fried chicken in the middle, were all stacked high. Serving sizes at this restaurant seem to be large on many items.

I've been on a chicken fried steak kick lately. I tried the steak at Mr Juicy, which is no longer available, I tried the steak from Richters Antler Cafe, which was one of the best chicken fried steaks I've ever had, I tried Spechts a few weeks ago, and now Bobbies.. So how did Bobbies CFS hold up against the competition? Size wise it had everyone beat, with Maverick a close 2nd, and Richters 3rd. Flavor wise, Richters is still the winner. The flavor on this steak was really good though.

When I took my first bite I noticed the distinct taste of paprika which I love on chicken fried steaks, but I didnt visibly see it at first. Then I noticed the batter appeared to have red specks in it, then when a piece of breading peeled off I saw the entire inside of it appeared to be reddish. I think at least one side of this meat is covered with paprika before its dipped and fried. It had really good flavor, the batter was crispy, had a little spice to it, but overall fantastic flavor. I managed to eat 2/3 of the steak, and took a large togo box completely full.

Along with the steak I had fried okra, it was ok, nothing overly special, and loaded mashed potatoes. The potatos were $1 extra, but had baked cheese, thick sliced bacon and chives on top. Im not 100% sure the potatoes were fresh made, they appeared very creamy, but there was chunks in it, the flavor was in between a very good instant potatoes, and a decent home made mash. I honestly couldn't tell. They were tasty though.

Other notable things about Bobbies, its an old filling (gas) station, the bathrooms are on the side and back walls, theres a glass cabinet of fresh pies and desserts, and the giant chicken fried steak is $14, the smaller version is $12. Ohh and again, they close at 3pm, their menu is breakfast/lunch (brunch) menu.

Now the issues, my waitress never came back to check on me, or refill my drink. The menu didnt say I could get onion rings on the chicken fried steak, I wanted to try them, and then I saw someone else order them with a chicken fried steak. My drink was half empty when they brought the food, and ran out before I finished eating. I was nearly ready to go up to the register at the point the waitress finally came to my table. I was there nearly an hour. Service definitely could have been improved.

I would definitely return, the food was great, and the prices were fair. 2 people could split this meal and leave completely full. Its going to make one of the top 5 positions on my Chicken Fried Steak list at this point. I just wish service had been better.
