The Large Chicken Fried Steak is Great & Priced Affordably

On my list for a while, I finally made the short drive out to Richters Antler Cafe. Its located on Hwy 46, about 15 minutes north on 281, outside Loop 1604. The menu has a decent variety of homestyle food. Chicken fried steaks, pork chops, chicken, liver, okra, mashed potatos, & creamed corn, are just some of whats available.

The insides are nicely decorated, with a real country feel, the walls covered with taxidermy deer and other animals, the ceiling lit by Christmas lights strung from antlers and Country music playing in the background.

I heard about this place while looking for good chicken fried steaks, so of course thats what I ordered on my first visit. The menu has the regular and large options. When I asked my waitress how big the regular and large were I was told the regular is this big, (waitress made a shape about 10 inches across) and the large is 2 of them. The price difference between the two was only $2.00. So I obviously opted for the large, I figured if this steak lived up to its reputation, I wouldnt mind taking any leftovers I had to go.

The chicken fried steak comes with 2 sides and some toast. A side salad can be added for $2. Foy my two sides I went with the creamed corn and jalapeno mac & cheese.

My food came out rather quick, maybe 10 minutes, probably less. The plate was a decent amount of food, I knew despite having not eaten all day I was going to have leftovers. The steaks were overlapped and the gravy had began to flow around the base of the side bowls.

I tried the mac and cheese, the jalapeno flavor was very apparent, many places advertise jalapeno mac, but just have tiny bits of jalapeno, this had some kick to it, and was slices of jalapeno. Next up I took a spoon full of the creamed corn. It needed a bit of salt and pepper, but after that it was pretty good. Maybe not the best cream corn ever, but better than most, and last up the item I came for, the chicken fried steak.

I sliced thru the crust, and took my first bite. The crust was crispy, crunchy, but not hard, it had really good flavor, the meat was moist, and decently tender. The gravy had good flavor, was well seasoned and added just enough salt and pepper to the steak that nothing was needed. I continued eating and realized Im dont really like fried chicken, but love fried chicken skin. My favorite is probably Church's chicken, and this batter was very similar flavorwise to Church's chicken. So close in fact I wondered if somehow the recipe was the same.

Whatever it was, this chicken fried steak was awesome, the flavor was great, the price was affordable, and the portion size was nuts. I was able to eat 1 of the 2 steaks, and a quarter of the 2nd one before I was completely stuffed.

My waitress was super friendly, attentiveness to my table could have been a bit better, but ultimately the chicken fried steak was great. This place has made my list for one of the best chicken fried steaks around. I'll definitely be back for another one. I'd like to try some more of the menu, but Its gonna be hard to pass up the steak on the next visit.
