  • ★★★★☆ Brisket Chicken Fried Steak Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Visited Mar 7, 2023

A Poor Representation of Texas BBQ.

This was my first time eating at Hondos on Main. I was optimistic the food here would be really good, I had seen a few people recommending the place online.

My wrapped jalapenos came out super fast, but nearly cold. They didn't taste grilled or baked, they barely tasted cooked, were still semi-crunchy and at $10 I regretted ordering them before my entrée even came out.

The chicken fried steak was decent size, flavor was OK, but wasn't great. It was properly cooked and the meat to batter ratio was good, it was just missing something flavor wise. I used 2 containers of gravy and added quite a bit of salt. The gravy was actually a highlight of the meal since it was made with green chile.

The loaded mashed potato's that came with the steak were a bit bland as well.. after the first couple bites that contained cheese the flavor was nearly gone. At the end of my meal most the potato's were still on my plate.

We also ordered the brisket plate. The first thing I noticed was how thick it was sliced. You dont see half inch thick brisket at many places. Next up was the tangy BBQ sauce. It definitely wasnt Texas style BBQ sauce. But the sauce wasnt the problem. The meat barely had and bark, and failed to deliver smoked pit flavor, tendernes, & moistness.

This place being in a tourist town, I felt the BBQ was a poor representation of Texas BBQ. It reminded me of a trip to the Riverwalk in San Antonio where I had some really sub-par Mexican food, and had to think, this is what tourists try when they visit.

Overall the meal was disappointing, the brisket wasnt very good, the chicken fried steak was mediocre, the food was rather bland tasting, and everything was a bit pricey as well. Probably one of my least favorite meals in Fredricksburg.
