Surprisingly Good Chicken Fried Steak with Au Poivre Sauce from a Drive-Thru Window

Chicken Fried Steak with Au Poivre

I've reviewed Mr Juicy before, for the hatch chile cheese burger, and it was fantastic, they launched a chicken fried steak the beginning of the year and I put off trying it due to massive popularity, lines around the building into the street, and nowhere to park for dine in. I finally made it to the restaurant, at lunch, on a rainy day, and the wait wasn't bad.

I was told this item could be removed from the menu possibly as soon as this week, a reason I made it a point to go try this item. With so many positive reviews, I wanted to see what all the hype was about.

The steak came out and it was served hot, how hot? I took a video of the steam before I cut into it. When I cut into the steak a burst of steam was released, and all I can say is that this was the hottest freshest chicken fried steak I have ever been served anywhere. I heard it frying in the back.

The batter was crispy and the meat was tender, the only criticism being that the batter was a bit salty. Paired with the fries the total salt was just a bit too much. The au poivre sauce was what excited me. It was a very thin sauce, with bits of bacon, slices of grilled onion and crushed peppercorn in it, but despite these ingredients it didn't have the burst of flavor I had hoped for. Instead it add what a good country gravy made with drippings would have added. I was hoping this sauce was going to be a totally new flavor I had not experienced before.

To add to the somewhat let down of what I hoped was going to be the best chicken fried steak ever, I had just eaten one of the best chicken fried steaks Ive ever had, just 4 days earlier.

Others had commented about the meat slipping out from the batter, and this was true, I made it a point to work the meat back into the breading a few times, Im assuming this has to do with the steam, probably keeping the breading from attaching to the meat.

Over all the meal was good, I left super full, the portion of fries was overwhelming, and I had to leave some on the plate. The steak itself was a solid 8.5/10. The sauce bumped this steak to a 9. But the sauce I'd never had before, failed to deliver the amazing flavor I had hoped for. After reading dozens of reviews and a news article and a restaurant struggling to keep up with the demand my hopes were super high.

What else can I say? if they still have it again in the future I'll give it another try, but I'll probably be back for another hatch chile burger.

One of the best Hatch Chile Cheeseburgers Ive Ever Had

I recently tried Mr Juicy for the first time because a friend had talked me out of it. I saw they had Hatch Green Chile as a topping, so for my first visit I ordered the Double Cheeseburger with Hatch Green Chile, fries and a soda..

Lets start off by saying I've had the green chile cheeseburger from the Buckhorn in San Antonio New Mexico, where it won a cookoff against Bobby Flay. That was the best green chile burger I've ever had, and one of the best burgers I've ever eaten as well.. but Mr Juicys Hatch Chile Burger was right up there with that burger. Honestly I cant say which was better.

The fries were fresh, crisp, and the portion sizes were huge. The meat had great flavor, great seasoning, and wasn't to lean as to leave a dry burger, this burger lived up to the places name and was super juicy. The toppings really pulled the whole thing together. The Hatch chile had decent flavor and added a flavor that is nearly impossible to find here in central Texas. If your a New Mexico transplant, this burger is an absolute must.

I spoke with the staff, who informed me they try to have Hatch chile's all year long. They are really Hatch Chile's they get delivered by a guy who drives them down here from NM, and sometimes even sells some extra in the parking lot.

I left totally impressed by the experience. The staff was friendly, the food was great, I was checked on regularly, and my drink was refilled before I left.

I left them a 5 star review on Google, and I rarely leave 5 stars, most my reviews are 4 star as restaurants really have to stand out for me to give the 5th star. I've had my fair share of burgers as I've worked on trying as many as I could from 2 burger lists, GQ's top 20 Hamburgers you must eat, and Thrillist's 33 best burgers around the country.

The burger I got at Mr Juicy was better than nearly all the burgers I've tried from those lists which spanned a 5 state area. It was honestly one of the best burgers I've ever had..

This earns Mr Juicy's Hatch Chile Cheesburger a top spot on my "Best Food Anywhere" list.
