Most Affordable BBQ I've Had In A While

This was some of the most affordable barbecue I've had in a while. I ordered a three-meat plate with two sides, and with a soda included, the total came to just $24. The plate itself was around $18, which is an excellent price for the amount of food you get.

The three meats included two thick slices of brisket, two good-sized links of sausage, and two pork ribs. The sides were generous scoops of macaroni and cheese and potato salad. The plate also came with pickles, onions, and bread. The fountain drinks are self-serve with free refills, which is another nice perk.

The brisket was tender and had a good smoky flavor. The bark was particularly flavorful, and one piece I tried was especially good. The ribs weren't especially thick, but the meat had plenty of flavor. Even the backside of the ribs, with its seasoned exterior and pit flavor, stood out as one of the highlights of the meal.

The sausage was probably my least favorite of the three meats. I didn't really see or taste much jalapeño, although it did have a little heat. It wasn't bad, but the brisket and ribs were more impressive.

Both sides were enjoyable. The potato salad had a noticeable pickle flavor, with a little mustard adding a tangy, slightly sour taste. It struck a good balance without becoming overpowering. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and flavorful, although there wasn't anything particularly unique about it.

My biggest complaint was the barbecue sauce. It was a yellow mustard-based sauce available from a pump at the counter, with a very strong, tangy mustard flavor. You had to be careful with it because it could easily overpower the smoke and seasoning of the meat. Personally, I think the barbecue would pair much better with a sweeter, peppery sauce that complements the smoky flavors instead of competing with them.

They also had a small dessert selection during my visit. I was told they typically offer more choices on weekends, but the options available that day included pecan pie, brownies, and lemon meringue pie.

Before leaving, I spoke with one of the cashiers at the front counter, who was very friendly. Between the generous portions, reasonable prices, and good barbecue, the experience was a positive one.

The flavors were competitive with many barbecue spots in Central Texas, and I received far more food than I expected for the price. If I lived anywhere near this place, it would be an easy choice when looking for affordable barbecue without sacrificing flavor.
