Saw A Furrs Cafeteria & Had To Stop - Hadnt Seen One Of These In Decades
I remember eating at Furr's locations as a child, although my memories of the food were pretty vague. I'm not sure which location originally stood out in my mind, but when I came across this one, I knew I had to stop and check it out.
We went in expecting something similar to Luby's cafeteria, which also transitioned to a few buffet-style locations around San Antonio. Both offer that familiar homestyle cafeteria food, and the overall experience was pretty much what we expected.
You walk along the serving line while the staff plates your food, and if you want more of something, your waiter can bring it to you. The selection was good, with plenty of traditional comfort-food options.
I tried a little bit of everything, or at least as much as I could before getting back on the road. The cheese enchiladas were just so-so and weren't what I'd consider authentic Mexican food. The liver and onions were decent, especially paired with mashed potatoes. I also tried some fried okra, a piece of fish, and a few other sides.
The highlight of the meal was something I remembered from the 1980s: the green Jell-O salad made with lime Jell-O, sour cream, and pineapple. It tasted just as I remembered and brought back some great childhood memories.
Overall, it was a pleasant enough experience. The food was familiar and satisfying, but nothing really stood out as exceptional. This is basic homestyle cafeteria cooking, and I wasn't expecting a gourmet meal. The prices were very affordable, the selection was good, and we all left full.
For the price, Furr's made a great stop during our long drive from Central Texas. It may not be somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit for a special meal, but it was a convenient, affordable option that delivered pretty much what we expected.— Paul
