Food Quality Seems To Have Declined Company Wide
I've eaten at this Taco Cabana many times, both dining in and ordering through the drive-thru. On this visit, I was back to get replacements for a previous order of fajita and carne guisada tacos. During my earlier visit, the carne guisada taco contained little more than gravy and a single piece of meat. Thankfully, this time there were at least a few pieces of beef. The portion still wasn't particularly generous, but it was a noticeable improvement. The flavor was decent, although it could have been better.
The steak and egg, or fajita and egg, taco was also decent but lacked the flavor I look for in a good breakfast taco. Neither taco was bad, but compared with the many taco options around San Antonio, I'd put them somewhere in the middle in terms of flavor.
The steak torta pictured was from an earlier visit. Since I'd never tried Taco Cabana's tortas before, and the item seems to come and go from the menu I decided to try one out. The sandwich was a bit small in size, with a reasonable amount of meat, but there was more lettuce and pico de gallo than anything else.
When comparing Taco Cabana to the taco carts around town, the portion sizes are about the same. That's a little disappointing considering I'd expect a restaurant to offer more for the price. The bigger difference is flavor, where many local taco carts do a better job.
I've noticed a decline in Taco Cabana's food quality over the years, with things seeming to start going downhill around 2018 and continuing since then. The food used to be better, and while some items are still decent, the overall experience doesn't quite live up to what I remember from previous years.— Paul
