I Completed The Triple Bypass Challenge Plus Some - 1.5lb 5000 kcal.
I had seen the Heart Attack Grill featured on several TV shows, so when I was driving from San Antonio to Las Vegas, I knew I had to stop and experience it for myself. The entire restaurant is built around a hospital theme, from the red-and-white decor and ambulance parked out front to the waitresses dressed as nurses. Even the menu and dining experience are designed around the theme.
The burgers are named the Single, Double, Triple, and Quadruple Bypass, with each patty weighing half a pound. The burgers and fries are cooked in lard, and the restaurant offers unlimited refills on the fries they call flatliner fries. They also serve Mexican Coke, which seemed like the perfect drink to go along with the meal as everything here is high calorie.
I decided not to do things halfway and took on the Triple Bypass Challenge, which is a three-patty, 1.5-pound burger that contains about 5000 calories. I finished the entire burger, along with two 1-liter Mexican Cokes and part of a basket of Flatline Fries bringing my total to somewhere around 6200 calories. By the end, I was so full that I almost needed the wheelchair they use to take challenge winners out to their cars.
The burger actually started out tasting really good. However, I've learned from this and a few other food challenges that your taste buds seem to change once you reach a certain point. What started with great flavor eventually became a combination of pepper, seasoning, and grease. The last quarter of the burger was a real struggle. I actually had to chew the burger while taking sips of Coke just to get it down. At that point, my body was basically telling me it didn't want any more food by refusing to swallow.
That said, the burgers and fries are good when eaten in a normal-sized portion. The challenge is what really changes the experience. And, of course, there's always the possibility of getting paddled if you don't finish your meal, which is another part of the restaurant's over-the-top theme.
Overall, the Heart Attack Grill is as much about the experience as it is about the food. If you're looking for a normal burger, there are plenty of other places to go, but if you want something memorable and completely over the top, it's definitely worth stopping in. Just be prepared - you may actually need that wheelchair by the time you're finished.— Paul
