A Fun Dining Experience, Good Sushi & Decent Options

The revolving sushi bar at Kura was the first conveyor belt sushi place I'd ever been to.

The sushi gets loaded onto plates and sealed under a spring-loaded plastic dome, then set onto a conveyor belt that travels around the restaurant past all the booths, with little placards along the way indicating what's coming up on each plate. As the plates pass by, you just press a button on the edge of the plate and the plastic lid pops open, exposing the sushi so you can reach in, grab the plate, and let the empty dome continue on its way. Sometimes there are gaps where the item you wanted disappears before it reaches your table, but that's not really an issue, since the screen that plays the cartoons doubles as a menu. You can select whatever item you want directly from it, and a separate conveyor belt running down your row of tables delivers it straight to your booth and stops.

Once you're done eating, you deposit your empty plates into a slot at the table, which are all priced the same regardless of how many pieces of sushi they held. That slot calculates your bill as you go, and it's also what triggers the anime videos on the screen above the booth. Every so many plates you turn in, one of these videos plays, and once you hit a certain threshold, a small prize gets dispensed from a chute below the screen.

The food itself is pretty good overall. A few of the sushi items had amazing flavor, others were more average, and the hot food items you can order off the side menu were also of pretty good quality. Across the board, the flavors here run above average.

At the time of this review, plates were running in the $2 range, and I typically average around 10 to 12 plates per visit. For essentially an all-you-can-eat sushi experience of this quality, that's not too bad at all.

Kura is actually a large chain that started in Japan, and the quality that built the brand there has carried over to their US locations, even though some of the items offered here are more Americanized. All in all, this is a really good place to try all kinds of sushi, they have a very wide variety of fish, prepared fresh with interesting toppings and sauces I don't frequently see elsewhere. I'd highly recommend giving it a try if you haven't.
