Ice Cream Sandwich Made Of Churros
Churroholic & Hiccups had opened in my neighborhood, and had even been featured in a segment on the news. The items looked really interesting, and the few times I drove by I saw a decent crowd of people at the location. Friends and family of mine had mentioned they'd gone and tried a few items, so I figured I should go check the place out for myself.
The location featured a wide variety of desserts built around fresh churros, churros with sprinkles, chocolate, and fruity pebbles (the cereal) among the toppings, but it also had some other items on the menu, including hot food. You wouldn't expect calamari, wings, and popcorn chicken at a dessert place, but there it was. The main draw here, though, was clearly the churros.
After looking at the menu, I decided to order the churro sandwich, which was basically an ice cream sandwich made with two spiraled churros in place of cookies, with ice cream in the middle. Despite the reduced crowd by the point of my visit, there were still a decent number of orders ahead of me. The order did take a little bit to come out, but given the crowd and the fact that all the churros are made fresh, it was understandable.
The sandwich had a good texture, with the churros having a nice little crunch to them along with the sugar-cinnamon topping. It was kind of messy though, since the churros were hot and were actively melting the ice cream as fast as I could eat it. The sugary cinnamon coating falling off everywhere, combined with the melted ice cream wanting to run all over the place, created a struggle to contain the mess while eating.
The item I ordered was good, and the prices seemed a bit higher than expected, but it was clearly still bringing in the crowds. Aside from the messiness, the flavors were good and the whole experience was solid. It's not something I'd want to get all that often, but it would make a good dessert after a meal somewhere.— Paul
