An Oasis At The Crossroads Of Waterfall Country.
Another persons review called this place an Oasis.. and thats exactly what it is. Surrounded by forests we were out in the area hiking, doing photography and searching for waterfalls.
The Hankins Country store is located at a crossroad that leads to waterfalls in 3 directions. We passed the store twice before returning to head North. At that point we were starving and there was nothing else nearby.
We went in the store expecting to buy some chips, candy bars and a soda, but was surprised when we saw a deli counter and a menu for a variety of sandwiches.
What made the location even more interesting was the lunch meat for the sandwiches was from a nearby local meat processing plant called "Petit Jean". Even more intriguing was the "BBQ Loaf" which was a brick of meat. with a BBQ sauce crust. We asked about it and were told some like and some don't.
I opted for the plain old ham sandwich but my friends were more adventurous and went with the BBQ loaf.
It was interesting to say the least, but the sandwiches hit the spot. The inside of the store was interesting as well. We inquired about the caged room in the store with the mail slots, and were told it used to be the post office which now has a new building a few lots down.
The experience of stopping at this store is a memory from a road trip I wont forget. Just a unique spot, with unique food at least from a travelers perspective.
If your passing thru this area.. stop in and take a look, its a good place to grab a snack.— Paul
