Went In Hungry - Left With Boxes & Boxes Of Fried Rice
I had passed Great Wall many a time on my way thru town and one evening while looking for places to eat we decided to give it a try.
It took a while to initially be seated and then 2 attempts to get our drinks.
Once the drinks were at the table, they kept getting refilled at every sip. We were there at least 15-20 minutes before we placed our food order.
The people I was traveling with asked if they could get fried rice instead of steamed rice with their meals. The menu said there was a $2.00 charge for fried rice substitutions. The waiter asked if they wanted pork, shrimp, or chicken fried rice. One said chicken, another said pork. Then he asked if they still wanted the white rice.. Which confused everyone at the table.
The food arrives at the table a little while later, our glasses are almost empty, but in the last few minutes the amazing drink service has vanished. 3 Entrees are brought to the table, and then another tray with 2 giant bowls of fried rice.
We were all pretty confused yet again as to why these huge bowls of fried rice were coming out. To make things weirder the rice had bean sprouts in it, we asked the waiter about the bean sprouts and he replied that in authentic Chinese food this was completely normal and that it was a restaurant specialty that some people came specifically for.
We ate our meals, everything was served in large portions, and everything had good flavor. There were no complaints from any of us. When we were all done we still had a table full of food. So much that we made to go boxes to take back to the hotel.
We received the check for our table, split between the 3 of us, and the other people at my table were puzzled yet again. The two meals they ordered totaled over $50. The entrees were about $12 each, drinks were $2, appetizer was $5 but then there was 2 fried rices each marked $6.50 each. Thats when they found out the $2 substitution was for regular fried rice only, and they had been served full size portions at entree price.
We filled an additional box with $13 worth of rice, paid our bill and left all feeling like the waiter had really pulled one over on us.
Now as for my general chicken, it was pretty decent, not the best, but definitely not bad. It was just all the confusion that lasted the whole meal that impacted the experience. But its one I'll never forgot.— Paul
