Best Rocky Mountain Oysters I've Had
My first time eating at the Big Texan, I was passing thru Amarillo figured why not try it while in town. I'd seen the Big Texan on the Travel Channel and other Food shows before.
It was a weekday around noon and the restaurant was pretty empty, its a pretty big place, all wood interior, real old time west or ranch looking. There was a stage in the middle of the main dining area with a timer I assume is used for the 72oz steak challenge.
The menu had an unexpected item on it, Rocky Mountain Oysters. I couldn't pass up the chance to try them again. I'd had them 2 places before, so I ordered them as an appetizer along with the 9oz Ribeye lunch special.
The Rocky Mountain Oysters or "Mountain Oysters" on the menu were excellent, the best I've ever had. More than enough for one person, or enough to be your main entree. I ended up taking the rest with me to go.. surprisingly even cold they were a tasty snack later on. The seasoning in the batter gave them just the right amount of spice. The batter was crispy, not overly thick, had a little crunch to it, and brought the item together. The meat inside was tender, not cubed or sliced but more like random shaped pieces, which was one of the biggest differences from other places. These varied in size, shape and thickness. I had to stop eating them when the steak arrived, but the half order was actually pretty good size.
The steak that arrived was good, but I wasn't overly impressed with it. It was your standard ribeye, had no marinade or seasoning that I could taste. I like my steaks with flavor of their own, this one required steak sauce.
The outside parking lot had a lot touristy things take pictures of. People were out there snapping photos. I imagine on a weekend night this place might be a happening place, but mid week at lunch it was almost a ghost town.
Overall the experience was ok.. I would return again if passing thru, just for the Rocky Mountain Oysters. I've yet to find any better.— Paul
