Kinda Like Willy Wonkas, But For Saltwater Taffy.
I was traveling part of route 66 on a drive from Oklahoma City to Central Missouri and along the way I saw signs for a candy factory. It peaked my interest and I pulled over to stretch the legs and check it out.
Inside was row after row of taffy, and in fact a kitchen with a glass wall where you could watch all sorts of fudge and chocolate being made. I didn't notice if there was a taffy puller (little more on this later). Surprisingly I grabbed about 5 pieces of all the flavors I thought were interesting, but this filled a bag pretty quick as there were probably about 75 flavors.
All in all, I think I grabbed about 60 pieces which rang up a mere $6.75.
I read online later the prices are about $7 a pound for all candy including taffy.
What made these taffies interesting was the odd assortment of flavors. Rootbeer, Pina Colada, Cupcake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Popcorn, Maple Bacon, Cherry Cola, Birthday Cake ect..
They also sell sodas, chocolates, fudge, and even have baskets of mass produced candies, some which I haven't seen in years, like Smarties, Chico Sticks, Peanut Butter Bars, Aba-Zaba, Bit-O-Honey ect.. You can go crazy trying to decide what to toss in your bag.
Whats a little interesting is, as I traveled north on I-44 towards St Louis, I saw more and more places advertising themselves as candy stores, and candy factories. I saw the same identical swirled taffy with the same wrappers at other stores. After a little research I verified these stores source thier taffies from commercial distributors.
Regardless, I gave the taffies I brought back to a lot of people and everyone loved them. Just be careful to not let them melt in your car, or get soggy in your ice-chest. People asked where they could get more of them. If I go back that direction I will be bringing back a lot more than $10 worth next time.
Now you might be seeing this photo of a huge bathroom. I found it slightly comical, as I opened a small door marked bathrooms, and entered a room nearly half the size of the store, with fancy tile floors and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I just had to snap a photo.— Paul
