A Donut Meal - Thats Insanely Good, But Very Sweet, Rich & Filling.

I saw Gourdough's on TV one day, and put it on the list of places I wanted to try in Austin TX.

When I arrived I found an open dining area, in front of a silver stream trailer, with a really varied menu of items. I knew what I was here for, the Mother Clucker, but the rest of the items on the menu deserved consideration because it was a really odd eclectic assortment of items assembled into donut sandwiches.

The Mother Clucker is a glazed doughnut topped with a fried chicken strip, and drizzled with honey butter. I wasn't sure what this was going to taste like, especially since I hadn't had chicken and waffles before either. But from what I saw on TV it looked really good.

I watched as other people received their orders. All sorts of weird items coming out to the tables. Doughnuts with crushed oreos and gummy worms (dirt and worms), fried ham and bacon with jelly on them, and then finally my Mother Clucker.

I ate about 3/4 of the thing before I decided I just couldn't eat any more. Its one of those items that is insanely tasty, but so rich you could make yourself sick trying to eat all of it. The doughnut itself was great, the chicken strip was crispy and tasty, and the honey butter was sweet and brought the whole thing together. But I jokingly said to someone, I can feel my arteries clogging as I sit here. I think I need to stop.

The donut was amazing, but it was really a meal on its own. I wasnt expecting an item like this to be so filling, and when I ordered I almost considered buying 2 items. I wouldnt have been able to finish half of each, which is insane considering your eating a single donut. But these donuts were big, maybe 1 3/4" thick and 4 1/2" wide.

I plan to visit again, and take others with me, as I saw many items on the menu that were intriguing. I figure with a few people we can run the menu, cut them into pieces and try a good portion of the items.

This place is for those who are willing to explore things that wouldn't seemingly go together. If you like good food, and crazy combinations check this place out. Its fun, its filling, and tasty.. Its near downtown Austin, closer to the greenbelt, springs, and riverside park areas.

    **Update**
While updating closed restaurants, I discovered this food truck actually moved, then turned into a restaurant, then the restaurant closed, but the truck is still open 14 years later. I had thought it was gone. So I can still make my return trip after all these years.
