1970s & 80s Homestyle Cafeteria Style Food
I've been eating at various Furr's locations for over three decades, and this location is a decent option, although it isn't one of my favorites. Sadly, many of the Furr's locations I've enjoyed over the years have closed, so I'm always glad to find one still serving up homestyle cafeteria food.
The buffet offers a pretty good selection, including some items you don't find everywhere. The food is a mix of traditional homestyle favorites, modern buffet staples, and dishes that take me back to the 1980s, when I regularly dined at cafeteria-style restaurants like Luby's in the local malls. Items like Emerald Green Jello Salad and tortilla-crusted fish are reminders of that era.
I've visited this location twice, and while most Furr's restaurants offer many of the same dishes, the experience can vary from one location to another. Some have fresher food due to higher customer volume, better wait service, or a little more variety. This location falls somewhere in the middle of the ones I've tried. The foods flavor has been pretty good and everything reasonably fresh, with wait times to be seated being decently fast.
Some of my favorite items here include the fried fish, which is especially good, rectangular squared, crispy crusted, and tender. Its much like what Luby's and other places served back then and still do. Liver and onions, that aren't overly bitter, with flavorful brown gravy and grilled onions, and pineapple-lime Jello salad, an item you don't see often these days. The selection may appeal more to an older crowd, but that's part of the charm for me.
If you enjoy homestyle food, buffets and a little nostalgia mixed in with your meal, Furr's is worth trying.— Paul
