Tried Excalibur's Lunch & Dinner Buffet Using Buffet Certificates

This was my first time eating at the Excalibur buffet. I'd never heard any positive or raving reviews about it, but since I was staying at the hotel and was given buffet credits I went down to check it out.

I first visited for lunch. I found that even close to noon and 1pm, items were just being brought out to the buffet. Some items were unavailable while I was eating but had tags indicating where they were supposed to be. I asked about some of them and was told that the cook decides the order to prepare the items and some items he chooses not to bring out until later in the day, some as late as 1pm.

This would mean for the best selection you should visit around 1pm.
My lunch visit wasn't overly impressive, nothing great but wasn't bad either. The selection is big enough you should be able to find something decent.

I returned for a dinner buffet to see what had changed and get some of the items that weren't available at lunch. The dinner had cocktail shrimp, garlic shrimp, crawfish, sushi, pork ribs, mussels, & potato au gratin as well as a few other new items. The desert selection was pretty much the same at lunch and dinner.

The desert bar offered a wide assortment of items including a crepe station where a chef prepared them for you to order. The bread pudding however tasty made me laugh, it was runny and when I poured it from the spoon into my bowl it reminded me of the scene from Vegas Vacation where Randy Quaid says "Mmmm this bread pudding is extra runny tonight"..

I wasn't overly impressed by any of the items offered on the buffet. I had high hopes for the creme brulee but was ultimately disappointed. It had more of a pudding texture and flavor, and almost no vanilla flavor.

I doubt I would return again unless staying in the hotel. Compared to buffets at other hotels this was one of my least favorite. While not necessarily bad or the worst I've had, nothing offered stood out enough to bring me back from out of the way.
