Good Thai Food, Great Fried Sushi Rolls
I originally came to Tong’s Thai for the Thai food, but after a few visits, I discovered that I actually preferred the sushi rolls. They offer a wide selection, including tempura and deep-fried rolls, and some of them are really good.
In fact, some of the sushi rolls here are better than what I’ve had at many other places in San Antonio, including restaurants that specialize in sushi. The Thai food is good, too. I’ve tried about three different entrees, including Pad Thai and Pad See Ewe, with the Pad See Ewe being my favorite. The food has decent flavor, and while the portions are about average or sometimes a little smaller than what you’ll find at other Thai restaurants, the overall quality is pretty good.
One of the things I like most about Tong’s Thai is having the option to enjoy both Thai food and sushi in the same meal. I’ve ordered sushi alongside my Thai entrees on several visits, and that combination is what keeps me coming back. Not many places offer both with this level of quality.
The restaurant’s interior is another plus. It’s nicely decorated, classy, and has an upscale appearance, making it a good choice for a date night or business meeting.
Service has been decent, although I do think there’s room for improvement. The staff generally keep drinks filled, but I’d like to see them check on tables a little more frequently to make sure everything is going well.
I’ve returned several times, and while Tong’s Thai isn’t one of my top Thai restaurants, it’s still a solid option with some excellent sushi options. The Thai food is good, but the sushi is what keeps drawing me back. If you’re looking for a place where you can enjoy both Thai cuisine and some surprisingly good sushi, Tong’s Thai is worth a try.— Paul
